Unlike old light bulbs and halogen search lights that used wattage as a way to describe brightness, LEDs use the lumen metric. This is not to be confused with the luminous flux, which combines the amount of light emitted with the direction it comes from.
The number of lumens you need depends on the type of task you are trying to perform. For example, a high-lumen search light is ideal for long-distance illumination. You also need to consider the shape of the beam. Lastly, you need to think about the color temperature and CRI. Another important distinction with LED lighting is that the life rating they advertise does not translate directly to hours of operation. Most LEDs are rated for lumen maintenance rather than burn time, which is the standard you would find with older technologies.
For example, if you operate your lighting 18 hours a day, seven days a week, it will take about four years before your product reaches its L70 life rating. This is an equivalent number of years to what you could expect from a traditional PAR lamp with a three-year warranty. This is an important point to remember when considering warranties for LED products. You may need to extend your warranty through a third-party provider to cover the full length of your project.
